Of canted rectangular outline with a moulded lip, brass handles and metal liner, on a fluted and reeded stand, the chamfered legs with leather castors and C-scroll brackets, with 'NORMAN ADAMS' label, repairs to the stand, with additional brass liner

A related wine cooler on a fret-carved stand was in the collection of the Earls of Shaftesbury at St. Giles's House, Dorset, and illustrated in the dining room (St. Giles's House I, Country Life, 13 March 1915, p.337). It was sold by the Rt. Hon the Earl of Shaftesbury, Christie's, London, 23 June 1949, lot 84 (£126), and probably again October 31, 2012, lot 85 (£10,000 including premium).This was almost certainly supplied by William Hallett (d.1781), the prestigious London cabinet-maker who was employed over a seven-year period by the 4th Earl of Shaftesbury. The 1732 - 57 Household Account Book for St. Giles's records `Paid Mr Hallett for Mahogany Cisterns 5.10.0'.
