From the family by descent
The Tank Chinoise was originally launched in 1922, its case design with raised overlapping bars to the ends an alteration from the classic Tank wristwatch, imitating the architecture of Chinese temples. The 1922 model is described and illustrated in Cartier - The Tank Watch by Franco Cologni, p. 187.
The inscription on the reverse of the case refers to the year that the aviators Sir Arthur Longmore and Sir Philip Sassoon flew a seaplane together to India
In his book 'From Sea to Sky' published in 1960, Sir Arthur Longmore writes ''At the end of September 1928 I accompanied the Under-Secretary of State for Air, Sir Philip Sassoon on an air tour of inspection to the R.A.F. units in Egypt, Sudan, Tansjordan, Iraq, India and Malta. We left Plymouth on the twenty ninth on an Iris flying boat, ... Compared with the speed of present day travel our time must seem very leisurely. In all we covered just under 16,000 miles in seven weeks."
Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Murray Longmore, GCB DSO (1885-1970)
Arthur Longmore was born on 8th October 1885 in Manly, New South Wales, Australia, son of Charles Croaker Longmore and Janet Murray. In 1904 he was commissioned into the Royal Navy and later volunteered for pilot training. Lieutenant Longmore is recorded as the first person in Britain to take off from land and make a successful water landing in a seaplane. In 1912 Longmore joined the Royal Naval Air Service.
During WWI he served as Officer commanding No. 3 Squadron RNAS before being transfered to the Battle Cruiser HMS Tiger and in 1916 took part in the Battle of Jutland.
In 1928 together with Sir Philip Sassoon he embarked on a journey from England to Karachi flying in a Blackburn Iris II. On his return he was subsequently appointed Commander of the Royal Air Force at Cranwell.
During WWII Longmore was appointed Air Officer Commanding in the Middle East and retired as Inspector-General of the RAF. He died on the 10th December 1970, aged 85
Sir Philip Albert Gustave David Sassoon 3rd Baronet CMG (1888-1939)
Philip Sassoon was born in Kent on 4 December 1888, son of Sir Edward Albert Sassoon, 2nd Baronet and Aline Caroline Sassoon (born de Rothschild). He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford.
At the outbreak of the first World War Sassoon was a lieutenant in the East Kent Yeomanry later serving as private secretary to Field Marshal Haig. He was appointed Secretary of State for Air and in 1928 he joined Sir Arthur Longmore in the first inspection of British overseas air stations, flying the Blackburn Iris to India.He died of influenza in 1939 aged 50.
