The present lot was commissioned for the wedding in 1821 of William John Legh Esq. and Mary Ann (d.1838), eldest daughter and heir of John Wilkinson Esq. of Castlehead. Their fourth and eldest surviving son William John Legh (1828-1898) succeeded to his father's estates in 1834 and to those of his uncle in 1857.
