Born in the Chinese province of Guangzhou in 1913, Lee Man Fong is considered one of the most accomplished Chinese-born painters to live and flourish in Southeast Asia. Throughout his artistic career, Lee Man Fong remained steadfastly faithful to his cultural origins as an ethnic Chinese artist, schooled in Western art and living in the unique and culturally diverse region of Southeast Asia.
Contrasting his animal series offered by Christie's this season, Lee Man Fong's meticulous brushwork and attention to detail create elaborate scenery of mountains in A Distant View (Lot 462). Lee often took inspirations from his travels and moving experience within Southeast asian countries for his works, one of them is Indonesia.
