David Hammons is often concerned with the lived experience of African-Americans, one aspect of which is the ingenious transformation of a down-trodden situation. Money Tree depicts a makeshift basketball hoop, which has been made out of a bicycle tire inserted into a living tree in the backyard of a home in Charleston, South Carolina. This anonymous construction both refers to Picasso’s seminal Bull’s Head, which is made out of a curious conjunction of a bicycle seat with handlebars, and also, through its title, to the use of basketball skills as a way for impoverished teens to escape their situation and find fame and fortune.
