[Australian artists] increasingly turned to still-life as a means of developing modernist expression. Still-life painting had featured in Australian colonial life and experienced another brief flourishing in the late 19th century, but it was not until the 1920s, when it became an artistic site of modernist transformation, that it became a significant genre in Australian art.
