David Teniers I (Antwerp 1582-1649)

Taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, II, 708-729, Teniers here depicts Mercury discovering Herse, a daughter of Kekrops, founder of Athens, on her way to the Temple of Minerva to make a sacrifice. By Mercury, Herse will give birth to a son, Kephalos.
