Iconic Cartier
Exotic, wild, fierce and elegant - The first 'Great Cat' motif entered Cartier's vocabulary a century ago in the form of an onyx-spotted panther pattern wristwatch, created by famous French designer Charles Jacqueau. Over the years, this initial design has evolved to fully sculptured animals and the array of cats has widened to include the striped tiger as well as the panther. Promoted to Director of High Jewellery at Cartier in 1933, Jeanne Toussaint, a feline-lover nicknamed 'The Panther' by Louis Cartier and her colleagues, immediately took responsibility for supervising the 'Great Cat' designs. With the outstanding creativity of designer Peter Lemarchand, together they produced a variety of jewels which immortalised the motif in Cartier's design.
Over the course of these hundred years of design, the Cartier panther has gone through many variations but it is still one of the all-time favourites for jewellery collectors.
