Mountains of the Heart (Bosai sensei gafu) Kyochuzan, 1816
1 volume (complete) with a pale green cover with embossing, the title printed in black on a dark blue background, bound in a late 19th century decorated silk wrapper

The book comprising 21 pages, the title page printed in black on pale pink paper inside the front cover giving the title Kyochuzan and a secondary title Bosai sensei gafu, a 2 page preface dated hinoe ne (1816) and signed Bosai kanjin and Chokowa, 33 pages of illustrations of landscapes, sixteen of which are double-pages, followed by 2 pages of postscript, the first page dated 1816 and signed Ko with the seal Chokowa (Bosai), the second page signed Shinbaiso kikuto-rojin, calligraphy by Ogasa (Shoryu Sanso), the colophon is erroneously dated Bunka 8 (1809) and gives the publisher's name as Suwaraya Shimbei of Edo

A superb example of the work of one of the leading Nanga artists depicting a series of majestic landscapes almost overwhelming the small human figures that inhabit them.

This is almost certainly a complete first edition published in 1816. Another edition described as complete by Kenji Toda in the Descriptive Catalogue of Japanese and Chinese Illustrated Books in the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute of Chicago (page 421) has no colophon and only 29 pages of illustration compared with 33 in this edition.
