'Ce deplacement m'a changé, je revois choses et gens avec un agrément neuf et mon chevalet avec plaisir. Et puis Ploumenach, la lande dénudée, la tempete, et des aspects imprvus m'ont un peu renouvelé. Je vais tachet de restituer un peu de tout ca.' (3. September 1917)
Das Gemälde zeigt die Hafenbucht von Ploumenach, einem kleinen Ort in der Bretagne, wo sich Vallotton Ende August 1917 für einige Tage aufhielt. Von dieser Reise entstanden unzählige Skizzen, mit Hilfe welchen Vallotton zurück in Paris eine Serie von Landschaften malte, welche nach Marina Ducrey zu Vallottons ausdrucksvollsten Gemälden zählen.
This painting is of the harbour bay in Ploumenach, a small town in Brittany where Vallotton stayed for a few days in August 1917. Vallotton made innumerable sketches whilst on this journey from which he later painted a series of landscapes once he was back in Paris, a series that, according to Marina Ducrey, includes some of Vallottons most expressive paintings.
