signed 'WvdVelde' and extensively inscribed 'Timor Fe. XXIV. De Stad Koepang (Gezigt, genomen van de reede La ville de Koepang (vue prise de la rade) Avis pour M. Lauters. Dans le fond de la paysage, montagnes assez élevées, entièrement couvertes de bois. La plus élevée se perd dans le lointain sous un ciel pur & clair. Les maisons de la ville sont blanchies à la chaux. Dans la petite baie immédiatement devant la ville, le terrain est sablonneux. C'est une plage: sur les cotés s'élevent des rochers: cette distinction doit être observée. A droite se trouve un fort entouré de mur blanchis & surmonté du pavillon hollandais. Sur le devant, se trouvent deux praos indigenes. Le gouvernail a été sortie de sa place ordinaire & appendu au coté droit du navire.'

A preparatory drawing for a colour lithograph by Paulus Lauters (1806-1875) first published in 1844-45 in Amsterdam by Frans Buffa & Zonen as part of a series of fifty plates titled Gezigten uit Neêrlands Indië, naar de natuur getekeend en beschreven.

Van de Velde was recorded in Indonesia between 1838 and 1846. He started his career as a naval officer and later moved to the Dutch East Indies, where he worked in the hydrographic office in Buitenzorg (now Bogor on the island of Java) from 1840 to 1842. He was later a missionary in Cape Town (from RKD citing Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse beeldende kunstenaars 1750-1880, 's-Gravenhage, 1981).
