Though signed by a little recorded artist, the present group is also recorded by Ferdinand Preiss (1883-1943), a German sculptor who trained in Paris and Berlin and was known for producing small figures in ivory and bronze. A nearly identical group by Preiss sold Christie’s, London, 5 July 2011 (£5,625).

Only Asian Elephant ivory may be imported into the USA, and imports must be accompanied by DNA analysis and confirmation the object is more than 100 years old.
