The smaller fauteuil probably commissioned by Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) as part of drawing room suite, listed as including eighteen such chairs, for Wynyard Park, County Durham.

The small fauteuil was probably commissioned from Bertram & Son, Dean Street, Soho, as indicated by Royal Aero Club, Londonderry House inventory, 1949, p. 31, where the set of identical design from Londonderry House is described.
