With a later variegated grey marble top, the boldly reeded edge above a cavetto frieze decorated with narrow cartouches and diaper pattern, on bold bead and reel turned supports and a raised plinth, with mirrored back, on shaped and scrolled feet, labelled 'trunk'
33 in. (84 cm.) high; 39.1/4 in. (100 cm.) wide; 19.1/2 in. (45 cm.) deep

Supplied by Messrs Morel and Hughes around 1823 to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, to display a Momoyama mother-of-pearl inlaid dome topped chest.
With Odile Cavendish, London, exhibited at the Antique Dealers' Fair, Grosvenor House, 1989.

The stand was almost certainly supplied by Morel and Hughes to Hugh, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, around 1823, for the display of a striking Japanese Momoyama domed coffer at Northumberland House, London. Its form closely resembles other pieces of documented furniture in the collection of the Dukes of Northumberland at both Syon House, Middlesex, and Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, where original furnishings were transferred after the demolition of Northumberland House in 1874. The original account for the refurnishing of Northumberland House was submitted by Morel and Hughes to the Duke of Northumberland on 31 March 1823.
The coffer was sold anonymously Christie's, 14 & 15 June 1993, lot 429.
