Both Tudor Oyster-Prince Submariner "non crown guard" references 7922 and 7924 were launched in 1958, shortly after the celebrated and better known Rolex reference 6538. Whereas reference 7922 was water-resistant to 110 m. (330ft) and fitted with the smaller crown, reference 7924, such as the present watch, was equipped with a larger case and crown in order to withstand water pressure to 220 m. (660 ft). As reliable as their "sisters" signed Rolex but available at a lower price, the Tudor diver's watches were the brand of choice of many Armed Forces, particularly certain units of the French and the U.S. Navy.

The present watch is fitted with the celebrated "Auto-Prince" calibre 390, a 17 jewels movement developed by Rolex in the 1950s for Tudor.
