Edmund Blair Leighton (1852-1922)

This picture is a preparatory study for the painting, In Time of Peril, 1897, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year, and is currently part of the Mackelvie Trust Collection, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, New Zealand.
The sketch clearly demonstrates Blair Leighton's working methods, as he produced these small preparatory panels in order to aid him with his ideas for each composition.
We are grateful to Kara Ross for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. The picture will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.
