With a pinched spout and bifurcated strap handle, painted in polychrome and inscribed in Greek with a drinking verse within a roundel below scrolls and palmettes, between bouquets of brightly coloured flowers and foliage, on a circular foot

See Grazia Biscontini Ugolini, Ceramiche Pesaresi dal XVIII al XX secolo (Bologna, 1986), p. 121, pl. 105 and p. 122, p. 106 for a jug with the same inscription and by a similar hand, attributed to Pesaro (Fabbrica Ignazio Callegari).

This verse is written in colloquial 'Romaic' Greek, used predominantly by Greek-speakers of the Diaspora, mainly from the Old Ottoman Empire, and translates loosely as 'The Turks do not drink wine. It is drunk by the (Romaic) Greeks. It is drunk by impoverished folk, to forget their debts'.
