專家說明

The present drawing is a copy from a painting by Holbein of the celebrated book printer and publisher Johann Froben, a version of which is in the Royal Collection. Froben established himself in Basel in the latter part of the 15th Century and rapidly gained a reputation as one of the finest and most innovative practicioners. He was thus instrumental in establishing Basel and indeed Switzerland at the centre of the book trade at this time. Froben employed various artists to illustrate his texts including Hans Holbein the younger.

This drawing has been traditionally attributed to Edward Luttrell (c. 1650-1724).
