We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for endorsing the attribution upon inspection of the original (verbal communication, 26 September 2013). He points out that Jan van Kessel must have been very familiar with the work of Nicolaes van Verendael as the present composition shows the influence of that painter.
