a label with the presumed name of the sitter and her family on the reverse. In an elaborate carved wooden frame.

(Probably) By descent from the sitter to her son Hendrik Wttewaal, thence by descent to the early 20th century.

Maria Simonides van Nijs (Utrecht 1677(?)-1700), daughter of Jan and Adriana van Hellestein was married to Aarnout Wttewaall, 'landvoogd' of the St. Jan in Utrecht.
A copy of the present portrait, dated 1881 by J. van Selm is recorded in the Iconographisch Bureau, The Hague.
