專家說明

These paintings depict Henri d'Orléans, Duc D'Aumale, the fifth son of King Louis-Philippe, and his wife Princess Maria Carolina Augusta of Bourbon.

Winterhalter was frequently commissioned by his patrons to execute copies of his most important paintings, a practice that he usually delegated to studio assistants. The prototype for the portrait of the Duc D'Aumale is now lost, and that of the Duchesse is at Versailles. In addition to the present works, Louis Philippe also commissioned at least one other set of copies of this composition.

While the portrait of the Duchesse would appear to be wholly a studio work, the quality of the pendant suggests that Winterhalter may have participated in its execution.

We would like to thank Eugene Barilo von Reisberg for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
