'[One to] whom my grandfather immediately took was a young poet and writer who came down from the Architectural Review to see the house, accompanied by his young wife. His name was John Betjeman and he was whisked through the rooms in a Georgian haze, returning to London to put his feelings into words. 'I hope I shall see you again soon,' he wrote, 'You have written the two bibles of my life; Monumental Classic Architecture of the 18th and 19th Centuries, and Regional Architecture in the West of England. If I were king, I would give you a peerage.''
