Edward Lear (London 1812-1888 San Remo, Italy)

1863 was to be the last year which Lear spent time working in his beloved Ionian Islands as the British Cabinet had agreed to restore the islands to Greece. On 4th April 1863 he set off on a two month tour of the Islands to gather material to work up into lithographic plates for his book Views in the Ionian Islands which was published in December 1863. This present work shows the island of Santa Maura which is now known as Lefkás and lies just off Akasnania on the Greek mainland.
