Square, enameled in translucent red over a wavy guilloché ground, centering a white enamel dial within chased silver bezel, black Arabic chapters and pierced rose gold hands, all within an acanthus-chased border, the mammoth ivory backing with silver scroll strut, the edges with engraved presentation inscription '[To] Duke G.N. Leuchtenberg in good memory from [the] officers [of the] Esk. E.V. 12/15/1905 Bar. Korf, Gr. Nieroth II, Rydzevskii, Gr. Benningsen, Bar. Meyendorf, Bar. Pahlen Derfelden, Gr. Benckendorf, Gr. Kapnist, Von-Struve', marked on lower edge

Presented to George Nikolaevich de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1872-1929) in 1905 by his fellow officers of His Majesty's squadron.
By descent to the present owner.

The recipient of the present lot, George Nikolaevich de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1872-1929), was the grandson of Maximilian de Beauharnais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852), the husband of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (1819-1876), daughter of Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855). Through this ancestral line, George Nikolaevich was also a descendant of Napoléon Bonaparte's first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814).

George Nikolaevich was an officer in the Horse Guard Regiment, one of the most well-known cavalry regiments of the Russian Imperial Guard. The present lot was gifted to him in 1905 from his fellow squadron members, presumably upon his retirement.
