The Order of Santiago was founded in the 12th century. It owes its name to the patron saint of Galicia and Spain under whose banner the Christians of Galicia and Asturias began in the 9th century to combat and drive back the arabs from the Iberian Peninsula. The Peeters- Fontainas copy sold for £120 in 1978. Peeters-Fontainas 625; Palau XV, 253975.
