Educated at The Royal Academy, George Morland (1763-1804) is best known for his portrayals of country life. In this scene of wintry mayhem, a group of skaters and bystanders watch as two men scramble on the ice. An undated copy of this painting by William Turner of Oxford (1789-1862) is in the collection of Tate Britain (inv. N02978).
