專家說明

cf. S. Day, Art Deco and Modern Carpets, 2002, pl. 47 for a similar carpet designed by Paul Poiret.

Paul Poiret was the leading fashion designer of the 1910s and 1920s. He reinvented the role of a designer by creating a 'total lifestyle'. In addition to his fashion house, he ran a perfume and cosmetics company as well as a decorative arts company. In 1911 he founded Atelier Martine, selling fabrics, carpets and wallpapers until it closed in 1934. The designs typically evoked nature motifs such as open flowers in bright colors, tropical vegetation, trees and leaves. The bold design and colors in the present carpet is similar to other works the Atelier executed.
