The heraldry pertains to the family of William George Ward (1812-1882). A fellow of Balliol, Oxford, and one of the Anglican 'Oxford Men'. A champion of Pugin, Ward moved to St.Edmund's college, Ware, a Catholic seminary. Whilst there, Pugin designed the chapel at St. Edmund's, circa 1846-1851. These candlesticks were almost certainly designed by Pugin and made by Hardman for the chapel and are similar to the pascal candlestick at St. Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham, and the standards at Jesus College, Cambridge.
