The medal was established in 1788 during the reign of Empress Catherine II to commemorate several victorious naval battles, which took place in the summer of 1788 in the lagoons surrounding the Turkish fortress of Ochakov situated on the western side of the rivers Bug and Dnieper.
The medal was awarded to sailors who took part in the victorious naval battles in the Ochakov waters between 7-18 June 1788.
