A related whatnot or music stand by Gillows was made to a design illustrated in the Estimate Sketch Book dated 1827 and another similar is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 Woodbridge, 2008, vol.II, p.110, pl.658. Stuart notes a very similar, though larger, piece was described as a 'bookstand' in 1834.
A similar whatnot was sold anonymously Christie's, London, 3 November 2011, lot 37.
