FÉLIX VALLOTTON (1865-1925)

Im August des Jahres 1917 hielt sich Félix Vallotton sechs Tage in der Bretagne auf. Zurück in seinem Pariser Atelier schuf der Künstler dreizehn Landschaften, die auf Skizzen aus seinem Aufenthalt basieren. In diesen Tagen ist auch unser Gemälde Rade à Trégastel entstanden, das die Hafenbucht von Trégastel zeigt. Trégastel ist eine kleine Gemeinde an der bretonischen Nordküste, der sogenannten Côte de Granit Rose. Durch die Gegenüberstellung der warmen Klarheit im Vordergrund mit der blaurot gefärbten Bucht und den organisch geformten Felsen im Hintergrund verleiht Félix Vallotton dem klassischen Motiv einer Hafenbucht einen phantastischen Charakter.

Am 3. September 1917 beschrieb Félix Vallotton in seinem Journal, wie sehr ihn die Bretagne beeindruckt und motiviert habe: "Ce déplacement m'a changé, je revois choses et gens avec un agrément neuf et mon chevalet avec plaisir." Und tatsächlich, die in diesen Tagen entstandenen Werke zählen zu Vallottons stärksten Gemälden, schreibt Marina Ducrey im Catalogue raisonné des Künstlers.


In August 1917, Félix Vallotton spent six days in Brittany. Once back in Paris, the artist created thirteen landscapes in his studio, based on sketches from his stay. During this time our painting Rade à Trégastel originated, which shows the harbour bay of Trégastel, a small community on the north coast of Brittany, in the so-called Côte de Granit Rose. Through the juxtaposition of warm clarity in the foreground with the purple-coloured bay and the organically shaped rocks in the background, Félix Vallotton imparts a fantasy quality to the classic motif of a harbour bay.

On 3 September 1917 the artist, in his journal, described how Brittany profoundly impressed and motivated him: "Ce déplacement m'a changé, je revois choses et gens avec un agrément neuf et mon chevalet avec plaisir." And sure enough, the works developed during this time rank among Vallotton's strongest paintings, writes Marina Ducrey in the catalogue raisonné of the artist.
