The hinged rectangular top painted to the reverse with a scene of Carità Romana within a foliate border above a Latin inscription, revealing an interior with red-painted foliate border and hinged side compartments, the front with winged herms and lion masks, the angles with winged female busts, the sides centred with further lion masks, the painted scene to lid original, the exterior regilt

A giltwood cassone almost certainly from the same workshop, decorated very similarly and the interior painted with the same scene, is illustrated in E. Barbolini Ferrari, Mobili Dipinti, Tempera, Lacca ed Arte Povera nelle Botteghe tra XVII e XVIII Secolo, Modena, 2004, p. 76.

A popular subject for many artists from the 16th to the 18th century, 'Roman Charity' was considered one of the most moving examples of filial piety in the literature of antiquity. The allegory tells the story of an elderly father, Cimon, who was forced to starve in prison whilst awaiting execution. To prevent her father from dying, his daughter Pero suckled him on her visits to jail, and so moved Cimon's captors that she won his release.
