Louis has indicated that, following the death of Ludovic Stewart, 1st Duke of Richmond and 2nd Duke of Lennox, he intends to grant the command of the 'Compaignie de Gendarmes' (the king's Scottish bodyguard), which was at one stage promised to the future Charles I, to Ludovic's nephew and lieutenant, 'le comte de Gourdon' [George Gordon, later 2nd Marquess of Huntly, usually at this stage known as Earl of Enzie]; James however begs him to grant it instead to Ludovic's brother and heir, Esmé, 3rd Duke of Lennox.
The 3rd Duke dying within six weeks of James's letter, the command seems after all to have been settled on Gordon.
