IRISH INDEPENDENCE -- 'Poblacht na h-Eireann Communique from the Four Courts' by Rory O'Connor. [Dublin: 28 June 1922]. Printed broadside (505 x 380mm). (Light fold creases.)

A broadside reporting on events that opened the Irish Civil War in the early morning hours of 28 June, 1922. As it relates, at 3.40 a.m. Tom Ennis, leading the Free State forces, demanded the surrender of the Republican forces occupying the Four Courts by 4.00 a.m. At 4.07 the government's artillery barrage began. Rory O'Connor's Communique from within the Four Courts was issued at 9.00 a.m. and reports that three casualties sustained so far are slight. It then calls for support: 'The Republic is fighting for its life. Citizens, defend your Republic!'
