A large French carved ivory tankard
Dieppe, signed A. Charlet, last quarter 19th century
The domed cover surmounted by figural finial depicting the Rape of the Sabines, the sleeve decorated with the drunken Silenus and Venus carried by a host of frolicking putti, music-making fauns, cupido and bacchantes, signed A. Charlet, the handle in the shape of a nimph on the shoulders of a satyr, the base decorated with grapes and pineapples and raised on four scrolled mask feet, the interior applied with a coat of arms reputedly those of Countess Fauberger

The two main scenes depicted on this tankard were carved after two different paintings: the Nymph carried by a satyr was carved after Nicholas Poussin's painting of circa 1635 entitled Nymph, satyr, faun and cupids in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie, Kassel.

The other side has been carved after Peter Paul Rubens masterpiece the Drunken Silenus, in the Alte Pinkaothek, Munich.
