AN EMPIRE AMBOYNA, TEAK AND MAHOGANY CENTRE TABLE

This exceptionally large solid teak top, has been cut from a single piece of timber. Teak Tectona grandis is native to South East Asia, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Burma. This particular top was cut from the cross-section of a tree trunk - possibly in Indonesia, and shipped over to Europe in the early 19th century where the base, veneered approriately in tropical Amboyna, was made to measure. Although it is difficult to establish a precise origin for the base it is likely that it originated in Brussels or possibly Amsterdam.
