MASSON A PARIS. LAST QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
CASE: the drum case with matted sides and bezel, surmounted by mounts emblematic of Astronomy atop a cloud and resting on the backs of Hercules and Chronos, these seated on a rectangular plinth with inset foliate scroll mounts to front and sides, above inverted breakfront base with beaded gallery mounts, rosettes and frontal satyr mask, on toupie feet DIAL: white enamel, signed 'MASSON/A PARIS', chased ormolu hands MOVEMENT: twin barrels, with silk suspension to anchor escapement, calibrated countwheel strike on bell, the back plate with repeat signature; the movement and dial probably adapted for the case, pendulum, winding and regulation keys

Several clockmakers called Masson are recorded working during this period. This clock may be by Charles Masson, who was received as maître in 1717 and died in 1783. He was described as a doyen of his community in 1778.
