According to a label to the interior, this chronometer is from the collection of the late Marquis of Ripon, 47 Cadogan Square, London SW, 11th June 1925.
Charles-Auguste Berthoud (1798-1896) was the son of Pierre-Louis (Louis) Berthoud, one of the finest French chronometer makers. When the latter died, his foreman -- the illustrious Henri Motel -- continued to teach his sons. Charles-Auguste remained in charge of the workshop at Argenteuil while his brother Louis (d. 1831) managed the Paris shop.
