Nicolas Heurtaut, maître in 1755.
This chair is an example of the 'symmetrical rococo' which is so characteristic of Heurtaut's oeuvre. The distinctive outline of the back with its serpentine arched cresting and slightly waisted frame as well as the characteristic floral carvings to the cresting, rails and angles can be seen on related armchairs illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1998, p. 403 and in B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in 18th Century France, Paris, 1989, p. 254.
Nicolas Heurtaut was first appointed sculpteur en bois in 1742, elected maître menuisier in 1753 and maître in 1755. He worked with numerous marchands-tapissiers and enjoyed the patronage of a wide clientèle.
