專家說明

We thank Mrs. Nina Mokady Hayon for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Painted circa 1925, the recently rediscovered Landscape Through an Open Window represents a rare glimpse into Mokady's early career, as few paintings survive from the artist's 1920s oeuvre. Born in Galicia, Mokady studied art in Vienna and Zurich. His family moved to Israel in 1920 and settled in Haifa. In 1927, Mokady travelled to Paris where he lived and studied until 1933. Executed in Isreal, the present canvas was one of the few works that the artist chose to take with him to Paris.

Stylistically, Landscape Trhough an Open Window defines Israeli painting in the early 1920s. Many European artists who settled in Israel, fell in love with its landscapes, exotic culture and the bright Mediterranean light. Like Reuven Rubin, Nachum Gutman, Pinchas Litvinovsky, Israel Paldi and others, Mokady employed bright colors and rounded schematic shapes to create a naïve and simple language.
