Alfred George Stevens (British, 1817-1875) was a sculptor and member of the Thorwaldsen studio in Rome. Famed for the Wellington monument in St. Paul's cathedral, Stevens was associated with Minton circa 1859-1861 and is principally known for designing majolica vases and wares in Renaissance style.
William Wise (British, c. 1831-1889) was a painter, etcher and designer active at Minton and associated with the Minton's Art Pottery Studio, circa 1870-1889.
Prior to joining the manufactory, he trained in London and worked for F.W. Moody painting glass windows, included tile panels for the Grill Room at the South Kensington Museum (now called the Victoria & Albert Museum). He was known for medieval, fantasy and rural subjects. In 1878 he is recorded as an exhibitor at the Paris Universelle Exposition with both the present lot and the Aquarium table service which he designed and etched.
