Modelled as a sunflower with a coiled serpent wrapped around its stem, the upper section lifting of to reveal an inkstand (lacking containers for ink, sand and one ormolu fitting for a pen)

This charming sunflower timepiece serves a double purpose, functioning as a clock and as an inkwell.
A watercolour depicting a virtually identical clock is illustrated in C. Plante and R. Garnier, Designs for Gilt Bronze Objects from the French Restoration 1814-1830, London, 2002, p.68, pl.52.
Identical examples were sold at Christie's, Amsterdam 24 June 2008, lot 317 (9,375 euro), London King Street, 5 July 2007, lot 1 (13,200 GBP) and New York, 21 May 1997, lot 505 ($13,800) and lot 509 ($55,200).
