A MODEL OF THE 1874 ACHENBACH FLYING MACHINE
FRENCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY
the wood and metal model with rotating tail rotor on pulley system for rotating the side propellers, the engine door opens, with a handle operating a rudder, supported on a wire stand.
22in. (56cm.) long

專家說明

The proto-helicopter designed by Wilheim von Achenbach was probably the first to introduce a tail rotor to counteract the torque of the main blade. It would have been steam powered, a pipe from the engine carrying steam to drive the rotors.
This model differs from the illustrated example in the poster in that the rudder extrudes the main body, and the tail rotor is of a different design.
