A FRENCH TERRACOTTA MAQUETTE OF A SEATED FEMALE FIGURE
拍品 58 PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTION (LOTS 58-69)

JEAN-BAPTISTE CARPEAUX (1827 - 1875), LOTS 58 - 62

The property of a connoisseur collector, these sketch models provide a fascinating insight into the creative process of one of the Second Empire's most celebrated sculptors. Famed for his monumental groups of La Danse for the façade of Charles Garnier's Opéra and his Triomphe de Flore for the Louvre, Carpeaux was the favourite sculptor of the Imperial family and famed for his fluidity and naturalism of style. Examples of Carpeaux's prolific output of sketches remain, many of which are preserved in the Louvre and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in his native Valenciennes, and his energized genius is evident in the fluid modelling of these apparently unrecorded examples.
