Edo period (late 18th century)
Decorated in varicolored gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane and cloisonné-enamel inlay with large shaped panels containing various flora, a river and butterflies, the panels trimmed in gold and silver inlay, all against a kinpun ground with sparse nashiji, the exterior of the cord runners patterned with gold foliate scroll; with a box (hako) netsuke decorated in raised relief with butterflies, sealed Sen'ei on the cover and signed Kosai with cursive monogram (kao) and gold-lacquer bead ojime
