'Lowry particularly liked the balloon man who we saw on the Salford market at Cross lane. When he looked at the painting [Balloon Seller], he made a comment that, "He couldn't stand up in those boots sir." So I scraped them out and he repainted them on the spot.' (Private correspondence with Harold Riley, 2011).
