專家說明

It is thought that the sitter could be John Bateman, of Killeen, son of John Bateman, who lived at Altavilla, Rathkeele, Co. Limerick, and was High Sheriff of Limerick in 1749. Captain Bateman married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sadleir of Sopwell Hall, Co. Tipperary, and secondly Grace, daughter of Henry Brooke of Colebrooke, Co. Fermanagh.

Stephen Slaughter, who was born in England and was a pupil of Kneller's Academy, spent much of his career in Ireland, where he is first recorded in 1734 when he painted the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Nathaniel Kane.
