Imhof was born in Bürglen, Switzerland and studied first with Johann Heinrich Dannacker in Stuttgart and then with the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in Rome. He was commissioned by members of the aristocracy across europe to execute portrait busts and exhibited once at the Royal Academy, London in 1846. King Otto of Greece appointed Imhof to teach at the Academy of Art in Athens from 1835 to 1836.
