Established in 1895, the New York firm of Edward F. Caldwell & Co. was perhaps the leading American designer of lighting fixtures and decorative objects through the first half of the 20th century. Working from its foundry at 38 West 15th Street, the company catered to an affluent sect and is credited with outfitting a large number of the Gilded Age's most opulent interiors, including the residences of Henry Clay Frick, Andrew Carnegie and members of the Vanderbilt family. Lots 117-123 demonstrate both the superior quality of the firm's fixtures, as well as the breadth of Caldwell's creative genius; ranging from exaggerated Rococo scrollwork to intricate Renaissance-inspired enameling.

This finely-cast centerpiece shares an identical marble bowl design with related pieces found in the company's extensive photographic archive. A related centerpiece of larger scale, cast with bearded triton herms, appears in the firm's record in January of 1905. An example of this variant design was sold at Christie's, New York, 25 October 2007, lot 308.
