The main band cast with the figure of 'Temperance' in a cartouche with two further figures in cartouches, the upper band cast with grotesque winged harpy figures, the spout with a mask and the handle with a figure of a woman, on a foliate socle and foot, apparantly unmarked

The ewer relates to a design by Francois Briot of circa 1585. See Hanns-Ulrich Haedeke 'Zinn' 1973. Abb. 129-130 & 134 in the Germanischs Nationalmuseum Nurnberg. This ewer has a matching top band of winged harpies and Mannerist ornament but differs in not having a hinged cover A ewer by Kaspar Enderlein similar to this one is illustated. ibid Abb. 161. in the Museum des Kunsthandwerks Leipzig and another by Jacob Koch and Caspar Enderlein Abb 162. and alos illustrated in Erwin Hintze, Nurnberger Zinn, 1921, Abb 57. which is the same as this lot apart from the upper shoulder band of ornament is in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Koln.
